About Jon and Shawna Davies:
Jon Davies is a private meteorologist now living in the Kansas City area. He focuses on practical operational research
concerning severe weather and tornado forecasting, and has published a number of papers in
professional meteorological publications. He graduated from the University of Kansas
in 1980, and has worked as a broadcast meteorologist and forecaster for several television
stations and private weather consulting firms. He
also worked at the Weather Channel in the 1980s.
Jons interest in
severe weather began while he was growing up in Pratt, Kansas, where he witnessed his
first tornado at age 9. He continues to enjoy storm chasing and storm spotting as a
serious hobby and educational activity.
Shawna Davies lives with husband Jon north of Kansas City, and is both a mother and experienced storm chaser, having chased storms since the late 1990's. Her interest in severe weather began as a girl when her family had a close call with a tornadic supercell storm near Lawrence, Kansas. She enjoys speaking to grade school kids about storms and severe weather, and loves to help kids to get interested in weather and science. Because men far outnumber women in storm chasing, she encourages girls not to be shy about their interest in science, and hopes to see more women become storm chasers.
